If you’ve been looking for ways to ramp up your recipe Rolodex and broaden your palate, Ramp Fest wants you to consider one of the most sought after members of the onion family: the ramp. From noon to 4 p.m. on April 21, Kan-Kan Cinema and Brasserie and Bluebeard host the second annual Ramp Fest at the theater, 1258 Windsor St.
A Ramp Fest ticket buys you a chance to sample dishes from 15 local chefs and restaurants. Every dish will incorporate ramps, a type of wild onion with a distinct, garlicky flavor.
Ramps are native to the Appalachian mountains — from North Georgia to Maine —as well as to the Midwest. They are typically the first crops to grow after winter and are considered a spring delicacy.
The chef line-up includes Bluebeard’s head chef Alan Sternberg, Gabriel Sanudo and Estban Rosas of Julieta Taco Shop, Love Handle’s Chris Benedyk, Whitney Barnett of Positive Foodie Vibes and Oya Woodruff of Chef Oya’s the TRAP. Beverages can be purchased from 8th Day Distillery, known for specialty cocktails and booze-free mocktails.
Tickets are $100, with some of the proceeds going toward Ivy Tech’s Culinary Crossroads Greg Hardesty Scholarship, ACLU Indiana and Flanner House.
