Indy residents are invited to offer their feedback on the city’s plans to convert eight one-way streets to two-way traffic.
The Indianapolis Department of Public Works says residents can offer their thoughts on the project by filling out this form. Public meetings for design feedback and review will be held at later dates.
More than half of the funding for the project comes from a $25 million U.S. Department of Transportation grant. The city is contributing $20 million to the project. Indy DPW anticipates construction will begin in 2027.
Earlier this year, the city converted five blocks of College Avenue between St. Clair and Market streets to two-way traffic, adding protected bike lanes and flashing crosswalk signals.
Other street projects are still in transition.
Portions of New York and Michigan streets, between College Avenue and Ellenberger Park, are being converted to two-way traffic. That work, which came about after a group of east side neighborhood organizations advocated for the change, is expected to wrap up by the end of the year.
Some drivers have expressed concerns that the changes will create traffic congestion, but city officials say the redesign will make neighborhood streets safer, citing studies from the Federal Highway Administration.
Two-way conversions will take place on:
- Capitol Avenue from 21st to 38th streets
- Illinois Street from 21st to 38th streets
- Pennsylvania Street from I-65N to Fall Creek Parkway S Drive
- Delaware Street from I-65N to Fall Creek Parkway S Drive
- Alabama Street from Washington Street to Michigan Street
- New Jersey Street from Washington Street to Michigan Street
- East Street from Washington Street to 10th Street
- College Avenue from Virginia Avenue to Market Street
