Gary Gee, a ceramicist and mixed-media artist, and FITZ, a cartoonist and illustrator, basically live in their studios. Both the artists’ work is inspired by their love for comic books.
You might have seen their artworks in museums, public parks and billboards around the city.
Gee and FITZ are two of the five artists who have been featured in every BUTTER Fine Art Fair, an annual event in Indianapolis that showcases the works of Black visual artists from Indiana and worldwide since 2021.
The fair was dubbed “America’s equitable art fair,” because 100% of the sales of artworks go to the artists. GANGGANG, the cultural development firm behind the fair, receives no commission.
In July, Gee, FITZ and six other artists showed works at a pop-up BUTTER exhibition series in Los Angeles. The series will move to Chicago and Miami later this year.
In this interview, Gee and FITZ share their work life balance (or lack there of), thoughts on AI-generated art and what’s left on their career bucket lists.
