A new event at Butler University is combining pierogi and poetry to cultivate community this fall.
Pierogi Tour, happening on Sunday, Oct. 19, celebrates the release of “Portable City,” a new poetry collection that explores Polish-American identity by former Indiana poet laureate and professor at IU Indianapolis Karen Kovacik.
In addition to a poetry reading by Kovacik, Pierogi Tour will also include performances by writers and musicians of Polish and Ukrainian heritage.
Natalie Solmer, an Ivy Tech associate professor of English and founder of “The Indianapolis Review,” is one of the writers who will be reading poetry at the event.

“We wanted to invite the community to celebrate our culture, our writing and our traditional dish of pierogi, because who doesn’t love pierogi?” she said.
You’ll also hear poems from writers Rachel Sahaidachny, a former executive director of the Indiana Writers Center and current executive director of The Big Silence; and Ania Spyra, a professor of English at Butler University. Ukrainian folk musician Nick Ivanovich will perform live.
Solmer and her mother are preparing some of the pierogi for the event.
“This is our family recipe, which we make for special occasions and holidays,” she said. “We are also working on a few other culinary surprises which you will have to attend to find out about!”
