We all know you can use a library card to check out free books at the Indianapolis Public Library. But that card is your ticket to a lot more resources.
Want to watch a movie without paying for a streaming service? Or use a sewing machine to try out your new hobby? Or maybe you want tutoring or advice on polishing your resume? You can get all these for free with a library card.
From Sept. 26-28, you can sign up for a library card and learn about everything it gets you during Library Card Days. The three-day celebration is at all 25 Indianapolis Public Library locations. They’ll have cookies, activities and a free tote for everyone that signs up for a card or shows their current one.
You don’t have to have a card for everything at the library. Without one, you can use public computers, sit at a library branch and read a book or go to free events, such as children’s storytimes or gardening classes.
To apply for a library card, you can visit a library location in-person or fill out an application online. The application is available in 13 languages. To be eligible for a card, you have to live in Marion County, be 18 years old or, if you’re younger, have parent permission.
Bring a photo ID with your name and current address if you’re applying in-person. To apply online, you also must have a valid email and not have a previous Indianapolis Public Library card.
Library cards expire after three years. You have to visit a library in-person and bring an ID to renew it.
