School is back and those first homework assignments are beginning to roll out.
If you’re a student and already overwhelmed by that new algebra or geometry class, don’t worry! There’s help available regardless of where you go to school.
Here’s what to know about two free homework-help services that cover everything from writing essays and preparing your resume to working through complex calculus and chemistry homework.
AskRose Homework Help
A tried-and-true favorite for more than three decades, Rose-Hulman Institute’s popular homework hotline is back again this school year.
As its former “Homework Hotline” name suggests, the free tutoring service allows students to call a phone number for help. The program also offers email and online chat services.
How it works: Stuck on a tricky math problem? Rose-Hulman college students are on call each school night to help with specific homework questions. When you call, email or open an online chat, tutors will work one-on-one with you, for as long as it takes, to help answer your homework question.
Who it’s good for: Indiana students in sixth through 12th grade.
Subjects to help with: Math and science.

Brainfuse HelpNow
Brainfuse HelpNow is a free tutoring service offered by The Indianapolis Public Library.
Live tutors help with homework questions in real-time. There’s also an online writing lab with a 24-hour turnaround window for essay feedback and an adult learning center that can help with resume and cover letter writing, Microsoft Office skills and U.S. citizenship prep.
All you need is access to the internet, which you can find at your local library, and your Indianapolis library card. If you don’t have one, applying is easy. Just stop in to any Indianapolis Public Library branch or apply online.
How it works: Need help now? Visit the Brainfuse website during tutoring hours for live, online support. Working on an essay or writing assignment and want feedback? You can upload a file to the Brainfuse website with comments for where you’d like help. A writing expert will get back to you within one business day. Other study tools and adult learner resources are also available on the Brainfuse website.
Who it’s good for: Indianapolis students in kindergarten through 12th grade, and adult learners. Spanish-language tutoring is available. Just be sure to check the “tutoría en español” box when you request to meet with a live tutor.
Subjects to help with: Math, reading, writing, science and social studies. Support for filing your Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA.
How to get in touch: Visit Brainfuse.com and have your library card handy to get started. Enter your library card barcode number — that long number on the back of your card — to log into the Brainfuse portal. There you’ll find tabs for live tutoring, the writing lab and other skills support. Live tutors are available daily from 2 p.m. to midnight.
