Your AES bill might be a little higher than normal this summer.
The electric company got permission to charge more through August as part of an adjustment for the cost of fuel.
For a household using 1,000 kilowatt hours of electricity, AES estimates your bill will increase by $9.52, or about 7.3%.
You can see how many kilowatt hours you’ve used by looking at your bill.
This bill change is different from the rate case that the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission is still considering. The deadline for a final decision in that case is June 24.
Why the increase?
The current increase to your AES bill is because of something called “trackers.” These are fees that can go up and down throughout the year.
AES and other utility companies have to get permission from the regulatory commission to change the fees.
In this case, the fuel adjustment charge is going up. This charge gets adjusted four times per year.
In its request to the regulatory commission, AES officials said the increased charge is because of higher-than-expected natural gas prices during a winter storm in January. AES filed the request in March.
The fuel adjustment charge doesn’t always increase, though.
The two most recent changes were estimated decreases of 4.2% and 2.6%, which brought your final bill down slightly.
At this time last year, the approved increase was about 5%.
