I'm an investigative journalist working as deputy managing editor for Mirror Indy. My team contains reporters on the government, K-12 education, housing, health and data journalism beats. I also serve as lead editor on most investigative projects.
Before coming to Mirror Indy, I worked as an investigative reporter for The Indianapolis Star and State Affairs Indiana. I was part of a team of journalists from four newsrooms who won the 2021 Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting for an investigation that examined K-9 units and the damage inflicted by police dogs.
I also co-authored a series that exposed a death crisis inside Indiana’s county jails. The articles were recognized with an award by Investigative Reporters and Editors, and the Indiana chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists has honored my journalism as “Story of the Year” three times.
When I’m not working with this incredible team, I enjoy playing board games with my wife at our house in Irvington and exploring Indiana’s wilderness with our dog, Kenobi.
My phone number is 317-500-4897 and my email address is ryan.martin@mirrorindy.org.
