Emcee and battle rapper Roxanne Shante will be joined by DJ Cool V at Butler University on Sept. 23.

Rapper Roxanne Shanté will speak at Butler University’s Arts and Events Center at 6 p.m. Sept. 23.

Shanté and DJ Cool V from the Juice Crew Hip-Hop Collective will talk on stage with local artist Gary Gee and poet and filmmaker Manon Voice ahead of a performance.

While they are in town, Shante and DJ Cool V will also meet with Butler’s IT WAS ALL A DREAM hip-hop ensemble for children ages 12-18, a summer program which connects youth with professionals in the industry and teaches them the history of hip-hop. The program started this year and is run by Manon Voice, who is also a hip-hop instructor with Butler’s School of Music.

After releasing her first single, “Roxanne’s Revenge” in 1985, the 14-year-old rapper started The Roxanne Wars, which created over 80 response records aimed at her. Now 54, Shante is the first female rapper to have platinum singles and gold albums and is a 2023 NAACP Legacy Award recipient. DJ Cool V is a hip-hop producer and DJ who has worked on albums with Biz Markie, Kool G Rap and Big Daddy Kane.

The Sept. 23 event is free and open to the public, with a livestream available. No tickets are required. The event is in collaboration with the Jordan College of Arts Signature Series and Hip-Hop Anthology.
