Soul Food Sundays are returning to the Far Eastside this summer.
You can enjoy free food, music and family activities 3-5 p.m. June 23 at the Community Alliance of the Far Eastside, 8902 E. 38th St.
The monthly event pays tribute to weekly family dinners many people have, said Kendra Nowell, CEO of CAFE.
“You would see that a lot on Sundays,” Nowell said. “And so we really wanted to touch the souls of the residents of the Far Eastside.”
Local organizations also will offer chess lessons, bike rides for kids and other activities, depending on the month’s theme. The carnival-themed event in June will feature a magician and cotton candy.
During previous Soul Food Sundays, Nowell said CAFE implemented healthy lifestyle programs throughout the event. She said this year, the organization was approved by the Marion County Public Health Department to host a farmers market each month.
“It’s like a small one focusing on healthy food and produce,” Nowell said. “But then also some Far Eastside residents that will be selling items like candles and herbs and home products.”
