Parents and guardians can learn how to help kids develop as better readers in an upcoming parent meeting organized by EmpowerED Families.
EmpowerED is a family outreach organization supported by The Mind Trust, a nonprofit that champions charter schools and other education initiatives across Indianapolis.
The parent group has monthly meetings providing resources for families, community members and parents who are looking to learn more about K-12 education.
Student literacy will be the focus of September’s meeting. Organizers will talk about The Mind Trust’s Go Farther Literacy Fund — a grassroots scholarship award that gives money to families who have creative ideas to help students learn how to read. Past scholarship recipients have used their awards to create home libraries and a bilingual book exchange.

The effort comes at a time when improving Hoosier kids’ ability to read is a top priority for state education officials. Despite slight gains this year, nearly one in five Indiana students are not passing the state’s third grade reading test.
EmpowerED’s upcoming Parents Connecting meeting will be 6 p.m. Sept. 19 at The Success Center at East, 10174 Tinton Court. Free food will be provided. Registration is available online.
