Several state parks will close for deer management control hunts in the coming weeks, including Fort Harrison State Park in Lawrence.
The first hunt will be Nov. 18-19 and the second hunt will be Dec. 2-3. The properties will close to the public at 8 p.m. the evening before the hunt and will reopen the morning after each two-day hunt.
The Indiana Department of Natural Resources said the hunts keep the deer population in check to ensure the parks have sufficient native plants to support native wildlife. Each year, the department’s biologists evaluate which state parks require a deer management hunt based on previous harvest rates and habitat recovery.
Only individual licensed hunters selected from a draw may participate in the hunts. Find a full list of state properties participating in the hunt on the DNR’s website.
A correction was made on Nov. 15, 2024: A previous version of this article stated the park will close at dusk the evening before the hunt. The park will close at 8 p.m.
