Editor’s note: This event was originally scheduled for June 14, but it was postponed due to rain. The picnic will now be held 3-7 p.m. June 28.

Mark your calendars for “A Family Affair,” a summer picnic hosted by Mirror Indy and the Indianapolis Recorder Newspaper on June 28.

Join the free community event from 3-7 p.m. at Belmont Beach, 1300 N. White River Parkway Drive.

This year marks the 130th anniversary of the Indianapolis Recorder Newspaper, the fourth oldest Black newspaper in the U.S., which was founded in 1895 by George P. Stewart. Robert Shegog, president and CEO, said the event brings back a past Recorder Picnic tradition that started in 1926.

“Just like the original, this updated version will highlight the power of connection, creativity, and culture — all in a family-friendly setting along the White River,” Shegog said in a statement.

The event is family-friendly and includes food, games, back-to-school giveaways, community resource booths, storytelling and live performances from local artists. Attendees should bring lawn chairs or blankets.

It’s free to attend, but online registration is required
