Expecting mothers and their partners can take free childbirth education classes in Indianapolis beginning Jan. 18.

The five-week course is organized by the Indiana Black Breastfeeding Coalition, which provides breastfeeding classes, supplies and advocacy. Participants will learn about nutrition, birth plans, coping mechanisms for labor and how to choose their doctors or hospitals.

The course also includes referrals for doulas, who are birth companions who support mothers in and outside the delivery room.

Enrollment is free, and donations are accepted.

The classes are happening at the Marion County Public Health Department’s Indianapolis Healthy Start office, 4087 Millersville Road. The first class is from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Jan. 18.
