You can learn more about changes to Indiana’s high school graduation requirements at a free event organized by the Indianapolis Urban League.

Beginning with the class of 2029, students in Indiana will need to participate in more hands-on educational experiences, such as internships or job training, to graduate high school.

The Indiana diploma overhaul will affect students entering their freshman and sophomore years this fall as well as students in grades below them. Some Indiana high schools, though, have opted to offer the new high school diploma requirements early.

The Indianapolis Urban League has invited the Indiana Department of Education to speak to students and families about the changes during the league’s annual Education Convening. The event will feature both a town hall meeting and panel-style discussions.

Topics will include conversation about how educational training sites are being selected, how students will get to these locations and whether students are being chosen equitably for these opportunities.

The convening will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 10 at the Madam Walker Legacy Center, 617 Indiana Ave. The event will provide breakfast and lunch so attendees must register online in advance.

High school students, parents, educators, mentors, tutors and other community leaders are encouraged to attend. See the Indianapolis Urban League’s website for more information.
