Indianapolis Animal Care Services is opening its new animal shelter building on May 11. The new facility at 5001 E. Raymond St. will be more than twice the size of the old one, with more laboratories and medical space, a bigger lobby and areas for monitoring animals.

But before the ribbon is cut, IACS will close from May 4 to May 10 to move everything from its current spot on South Harding Street to the new shelter on the southeast side. While it’s closed, you can’t bring stray animals to the shelter — only animal control officers can bring in new animals.

In the meantime, you can call the Mayor’s Action Center at 317-327-4622.

If you want to help, you can adopt or foster a dog to make the move easier. The Big Empty: Adoption Event will run from noon to 6:30 p.m. on May 2 and 3 at the shelter, 2600 S. Harding St. Adoption fees will be waived and all animals at the event will be up to date on their vaccinations. If you’d like to foster an animal, you can find out more online.
