The library was originally opened inside John Hope School No. 26 as the city’s first library specifically for Black residents. Picture this: You’re 8 years old. The teacher just got everyone lined up at the door before taking your class on one of the most coveted walks of the school year.

You’re going to the book fair!

And wouldn’t you know it, you reach into your pocket to double check you still have that $5 bill wadded up in there. Life is good.

Now, your adult self has a chance to recreate that magic.

Local bookstore The Whispering Shelf is partnering with Guggman Haus Brewing Co. to host the Grown-Up Book Fair from 1-5 p.m. March 1 at the brewery, 1701 Gent Ave.

The family-friendly book fair is free to attend, and you don’t need to register.

You’ll be able to browse through fantasy, sci-fi, romance and other book genres. There will also be children’s books and book fair trinkets.

If you have any gently used books lying around, you can donate them to The Whispering Shelf for the store’s free bookshelf.
