At the end of May, Mirror Indy gave some fifth graders disposable cameras and asked them to capture one of their last days of elementary school. (Turns out, kids in today’s world aren’t quite sure how to use film cameras, but they still do love to throw up a peace sign.)
About 75 students from Crooked Creek Elementary School poured out of the buses into Slick City, an indoor slide park in Brownsburg. They used mats to slide down head first, and it looked like a magic carpet ride, but with a lot more screaming.
This fall, the fifth graders are going to experience a big transition: Heading to middle school. While they played and ate pizza at Slick City, Daya Bates, Mirror Indy’s kid correspondent, asked her classmates what they’re looking forward to (or not).
“I’m excited,” said one student, Amara. “And it’s a little bit scary. I think I am going to have some nice adventures. I am going to learn about new languages and try different mediums for art.”

Joshanay
Excited about: “Seeing all the teachers that I already see.”
Not excited about: “Probably all the classes”

Karson
Excited about: “All the stuff I’m going to learn.”
Not excited about: “Tests. I don’t like doing tests in general. Math tests, especially.”

Excited about: “Band.”

Jayde
Excited about: “The sports and the new clubs to try.”
Not excited about: “The lockers, I feel like that’s going to be very hard.”

Amara
Not excited about: “P.E., for sure.”

Daya
Excited about: “Choir. I’ve been singing since I learned how to talk.”
Not excited about: “I am most nervous for what types of people I’ll meet at middle school. What if everyone already has the friends they want and don’t want to be mine? I know I shouldn’t be worried about these things since I’m a social butterfly, but I worry anyways.”
