When Keidrain Brewster was released after 13 years in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, he faced many of the same hurdles as others who reenter the community, such as how to apply for jobs and conduct himself in interviews.

“Something as simple as knowing to pull your pants up for an interview,” he said.

Brewster is now the owner of a truck company in Dallas and a motivational speaker. He is the keynote speaker at a reentry resource fair at Martin University on April 24. The free event is open to the public and will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“Today’s inmate is tomorrow’s neighbor, tomorrow’s employee, tomorrow’s coworker.”

In addition to Brewster’s talk, local reentry organizations will provide attendees with information and help connect people with services.

Brewster said nonprofit organizations that provide reentry services are critical for those reentering the community after incarceration.

“Those ground roots organizations are there to really guide them in the reentry process,” Brewster said. “Being able to navigate a computer, being able to know how to go to the BMV to get their license, knowing how to get resources as far as housing or food.”

Brewster said he likes to think of those organizations as first responders who help give people second chances.

“Today’s inmate is tomorrow’s neighbor, tomorrow’s employee, tomorrow’s coworker,” he said.

Registration for the event is not required, but attendees can reserve space or learn more here.
