The Indianapolis Department of Public Works has an ambitious list of projects it hopes to complete or get underway in 2027.

Planned work includes everything from street conversions and pedestrian safety improvements to roundabouts and trail upgrades.

Here’s a look at some of the highlights.

Downtown 1-way to 2-way conversions

Eight different one-way streets in and around downtown will be converted to two-way traffic starting next year, a move that is intended to slow down vehicles, improve intersections and upgrade traffic signals. 

It will include repairing 3.5 miles of sidewalks, resurfacing 5.5 miles of bike lanes, and creating 2 miles of multi-use paths.

Segments slated for conversion include:

  • Capitol Avenue from 21st to 38th streets
  • Illinois Street from 21st to 38th streets
  • Pennsylvania Street from I-65 North to Fall Creek Parkway South Drive
  • Delaware Street from I-65 North to Fall Creek Parkway South Drive
  • Alabama Street from Washington to Michigan streets
  • New Jersey Street from Washington to Michigan streets
  • East Street from Washington to 10th streets
  • College Avenue from Virginia Avenue to Market Street

Timeline: Spring 2027 to Spring 2029

Pleasant Run Greenway

This work involves making improvements to the existing Pleasant Run Greenway Trail between Garfield Park and Ellenberger Park. It includes replacing the pedestrian bridge connecting to Pleasant Run Greenway north of Raymond Street and the replacement of the pedestrian bridge at Ellenberger Park. 

Timeline: Summer 2026 to Fall 2027

Near Eastside streetscape

This project includes streetscape and intersection safety improvements along 10th Street from Tecumseh Street to Rural Street, and along Rural Street from 10th Street to St. Clair Street. This includes the addition of a multi-use path, improved sidewalks and accessible ramps, stormwater management, lighting and intersection realignment.

Timeline: Summer 2026 to Fall 2027

Nickel Plate Trail bridge over Keystone Avenue

This is a project to build a bike and pedestrian bridge for the Nickel Plate Trail at 49th Street and Keystone Avenue.

Timeline: Summer 2027 to Summer 2028

Madison Avenue

This is part of a project to reduce traffic lanes on Madison Avenue south of downtown in the Bates-Hendricks and Old Southside neighborhoods. The third and final phase of the project covers Madison Avenue from Pleasant Run Parkway North Drive to Martin Street.

Timeline: Spring 2026 to Spring 2027

Girls School Road

This work will involve widening and resurfacing of Girls School Road, including the addition of a multi-use path on the west side of the road, between Perimeter Road and 21st Street. The project also includes adding center curbs at various locations, drainage improvements and upgraded signals and signage.

Timeline: Winter 2027 to Fall 2028
