Indianapolis kids can start their school year off with a new backpack thanks to the Mayor’s Latino Advisory Council.

The council is having its first backpack giveaway from 1-3 p.m. July 21 at Brookside Elementary School, 3150 E. 10th St.

The event, which the council hopes to organize annually, will be in the gym. Organizers plan to offer free snacks, drinks and backpacks amid a festival-like atmosphere. Information about community resources also will be available.

Each household can receive up to four backpacks for their elementary age student. Children must be present at the event to receive a backpack.

Registration is required to attend. More information is available on the Indianapolis Public Schools website.
