Mirror Indy’s Hispanic Heritage Month event guide was put together by Sonya Anaya Chevigny, founder of Latinos Indy. The bilingual community platform has been helping Latinos across Central Indiana find local news, events, businesses, jobs and resources since 2024.
Chevigny is from Indianapolis, but her family is from Mexico. We met with Chevigny to ask her about what went into her event list and her thoughts on celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month on the heels of recent ICE raids and protests.

How did you put this calendar together?
It’s really beautiful because there’s so much going on. Indianapolis is so special that when you go looking, you find it. At LatinosIndy.com, we have a community calendar, and so we have a network of organizations that we’re following and are in contact with to make sure that we’re capturing their events and being able to help share them to the community.
It’s been a rough season for a lot of Latinos. Why is it important that we continue to celebrate?
Absolutely. Our culture is a point of pride. And we should feel empowered to go out and celebrate. It sends a message because that’s what helps uplift the community, and the more we uplift the community, the more we uplift the city, our neighborhoods, our friends, our family and our community at large.
Being able to go out and celebrate all of our different cultures within the Latino community is a really beautiful thing.

Tell me more about LatinosIndy.com. What is it?
We are a digital hub of resources, a small business directory of Latino businesses. We have a job board. Really, the mission is to provide a single hub that’s bilingual so the community can come out and find what they need.
At the end of the day, we like to think of ourselves, as the cheerleaders of Indianapolis for the Latino community, because there’re so many great things here in Indy and the Latino community is contributing. We just haven’t had a place to convene online, and so that’s what we’ve built.
I’m not gonna lie, when I saw your list of events, I was surprised by how many you included for professionals, for networking, for college students. Just because I would have focused on festivals and parties. So I wanted to know why. Why do you think it’s important to pay attention to this during Hispanic Heritage Month?
You know, a massive part of our culture for many — the reason to leave their motherlands, their home countries — is to provide professional opportunities, educational opportunities, opportunities for progress. And so for us, it was very important to include not just the fun festivities, the family events, but also opportunities for Latinos to come together and create those opportunities together.
So, we contain multitudes.
Oh, absolutely. Just like within the Latino community, so many different cultures. So many different accents, foods, and that’s a big piece of the work. I really want people to come out and experience these Hispanic Heritage Month events.
Beyond Hispanic Heritage Month, what are some other things you share on LatinosIndy.com?
We worked really hard to gain the trust of the Latino community, and so a lot of what we share are answers to the questions that we receive directly. This past month has really been a lot of questions on immigration attorneys.
We share information on how to vet attorneys to make sure that they’re legitimate because scams are very rampant. We share things like English classes, believe it or not that’s the number one question we get: “Where can I take English classes?”
We are part of this community, and so we try to share content that’s always verified. We always provide the sources because we want to make sure that there’s less misinformation being shared within the community. We try to be that trusted source.
