Teams from across the state competed Oct. 17 in Indiana’s second girls high school flag football state championship.

Lawrence North — the lone Indianapolis team to make it to the tournament at Westfield’s Grand Park Sports Campus — finished as state runner-up in a repeat matchup of last year’s final game.

The Wildcats beat Terre Haute South Vigo, 33-26, in the semi-state round early in the day to advance to the state final.

Get the backstory

In the final game, Lawrence North once again met northern Indiana’s Penn High School, last year’s state champion. Penn bested the Wildcats with a close 34-28 win.

The tournament, organized by the Indiana Flag Football Coaches Association, was the second state championship held for the emerging sport that’s on a path toward official sanctioning. More than 100 Indiana high schools fielded teams this year.

Mirror Indy followed the Lawrence North girls this season on their road to state. The team lost only once in regular season play, falling to Warren Central 34-28.

Stay tuned for more on the Wildcats’ repeat run to state. The Mirror Indy team is working on a micro-documentary about Lawrence North’s season.
