Citizens Action Coalition, a nonprofit that advocates on behalf of utility customers, will host a webinar at 7 p.m. Dec. 7 to teach people about shared solar facilities for homes and businesses.

The webinar will feature speakers who can answer questions and share information about community solar, which is meant to make solar power accessible for those who may not otherwise have access to it, including renters.

The nonprofit is a founding member of Hoosiers for Community Solar, which is seeking legislation to authorize independent community solar in Indiana.

According to the group, customers — which can also include churches, schools and local governments — could subscribe to receive a credit on their electric bills for a share of the power from the solar panels.

Rather than going on top of the roof of a home, the solar panels can be placed in areas such as a field or parking lot.

Indiana has enough solar installed to power almost 200,000 homes, according to the Solar Energy Industries Association, which also reported 1.7% of the state’s electricity comes from solar.
