Wellness and community are at the center of a free event June 6 at Madam Walker Legacy Center. “Nourishing Well: Black Women and the Poetics of Sacred Space,” curated by artist Mariah Ivey, will feature poetry, visual art, film and other media to explore the range of the experiences of Black women’s lives.
The event is part of the Madam Walker Legacy Center’s quarterly “Art on the Ave” series, which highlights visual artists throughout central Indiana.
“I am thrilled to invite you all to the opening reception of Nourishing Well,” Ivey said via her Instagram page. “This multimedia art exhibition and poetry show features a host of incredible women I am so honored to call friend, sister, partner, village.”
The art gallery will open at 6 p.m, with visual art provided by artists Ashley Nora, JayAmi Sellers, Ayanna Tibbs, Mariah Ivey, D’yshe Mansfield and Deonna Weatherly. Poetry readings, music and other performance art pieces by Chantel Massey, Okara Imani, Gabrielle Patterson, Mariah Ivey, Elle Roberts, Jessica Louise and Auboni Hart will start at 7 p.m.
Though the event is free, registration is required. Along with the gallery and performances, vendors Worthy By Nature and Black World Schoolers will have tables at the event.
