Past and current Martindale residents are invited to an information session about efforts to designate the neighborhood as a historic Black community.

The meeting is 5-7 p.m. July 23 at Frederick Douglass Park, 1616 E. 25th St. The information session is presented by Indiana Landmarks’ Black Heritage Preservation Program and the Indianapolis Department of Metropolitan Development.

Attendees will learn about current preservation initiatives in the area and the benefits of listing the neighborhood in the National Register of Historic Places. Some of those benefits include tax incentives, access to grants and support for preservation.

Boundaries for the proposed Martindale Historic District are 30th Street to the north, 25th Street to the south, Dr. Andrew J. Brown Avenue to the west and Brouse Avenue to the east.

The information session is free to attend, but registration is encouraged. Registration can be completed online or by calling Indiana Landmarks at 317-639-4534 or 800-450-4534. More information about the meeting can be found on the Indiana Landmarks website.
