We’re celebrating our month-old arts and culture newsletter, Play List, with an art show, a DJ, appetizers and wine.

Artists Adrian Smith and Rebeka Sweetland’s paintings center creation – nature itself, and the act of creating. Their exhibition, “Living Waters & Earthly Visions,” opens with a free First Friday mixer in the Schwitzer Art Gallery at the Circle City Industrial Complex, 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, August 2. The gallery is on the second floor.

Smith will show oceanscapes, which started with a dream of serene water. He sees his paintings as symbolic of God’s presence in nature. Sweetland, who is also a ceramicist and mother, hopes her depictions of the ethereal on Earth reflect her story.

Every Wednesday at noon, Play List, which is inspired by the alt-weeklies of the past, hits inboxes. In it, you’ll find ideas for exploring the city and find stories about all the people making cool things happen, like Indy’s pro-wrestlers at a summer showdown or a micro-museum that uses augmented reality to share a neighborhood’s history.

At the mixer, you’ll have a chance to meet the people who make Play List happen, including arts and culture editor Jennifer Delgadillo, who uses her voice and humor to curate the newsletter; arts and culture reporter Breanna Cooper; community journalism director Ariana Beedie; and Free Press Indiana market director Ebony Chappel.
