Get a rare and intimate look inside one of America’s most notorious maximum security prisons in a new documentary.
Local film nonprofit Reels & Roots will host the screening of “BEYOND” at 5 p.m. Sept. 27 at the Phoenix Theatre Culture Centre.
The documentary follows a group of incarcerated men at Sing Sing Correctional Facility as they prepare for “Beyond the Block,” a TED Talk-style public speaking event, from auditions to their moments on stage. The men share personal stories on redemption, vulnerability and their views on systemic change.

After the film screening, guests can talk with Asia Johnson, the director and producer of “BEYOND,” and enjoy light refreshments. The event is free, but you must register online.
Johnson’s documentary captures a new story at the Sing Sing facility. The 2023 feature film, “Sing Sing,” featuring Colman Domingo about the prison’s Rehabilitation Through the Arts program was met with critical acclaim and earned three Academy-Award nominations including Best Actor.
“Sing Sing” actors Clarence Maclin and JJ Velazquez, who were formerly incarcerated at the prison, are also executive producers on Johnson’s “BEYOND” documentary.
