Speedway town officials will hold a public meeting March 9 to discuss a proposed sewer utility rate increase to pay for a project that will prevent sewage from entering public waterways.

The meeting will be 7 p.m. at the Speedway Municipal Center, 5300 Crawfordsville Road.

The Speedway Town Council is considering raising the sewer utility fee by up to $12 a month in order to pay for a mandatory wastewater treatment plant project that could cost $15 million to $18 million.

The project would include:

  • a new combined sewer tank
  • a separate wet weather treatment facility
  • replacement and modernization of ultraviolet disinfection equipment

It’s part of an agreement with the Indiana Department of Environmental Management after the town reported violations of discharge permit by releasing excess amounts of phosphorus, E. coli and other pollutants into Eagle Creek between August 2022 and May 2025.
