Westside residents will meet April 2 to discuss how the potential two-year closure of the 16th Street Bridge for repairs will affect them. They’ll also discuss alternative options to present to city leaders.
The town hall meeting will happen at 6:30 p.m. at the Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, 1301 N. Goodlet Ave.
The Indianapolis Department of Public works plans to close the 16th Street Bridge over the White River for two years. Workers will rehabilitate the nearly 70-year-old bridge and replace the pothole-covered decking.
Some are concerned that the lengthy bridge closure for the $17.6-million project could negatively affect residents and businesses. They are also worried that the closure could last a lot longer than planned. The 30th Street Bridge repair project, for instance, lasted about four years longer than anticipated.
They want DPW to consider alternatives to fully closing the bridge, such as leaving a portion of the bridge open while work is performed.
