The Afghan American Community Center will host its annual culture festival on Saturday, Sept. 6.
The free, family-friendly event is an opportunity to celebrate the holidays of Afghan Eid and Afghan Nowruz, a New Year based on the solar calendar. All community members are welcome to join the festivities, which will include Afghan music, food, cultural displays, guest speakers, kids performances and activities.
“This is an opportunity for our friends and other communities to also come and enjoy our culture, and also connect with our communities so they can support each other,” said Najia Sherzad Hoshmand, founder of the Afghan American Community Center.
Hoshmand said the group has also invited local and state officials who have supported Afghan residents, such as Mayor Joe Hogsett, U.S. Rep. André Carson, U.S. Sen. Todd Young and members of the Marion County Sheriff’s Office.
“We are creating an opportunity for our community to connect with other broader communities,” Hoshmand said. “Also to connect to the service providers and their local state government officials, and other organizations who are providing services to the new communities.”
The Afghan Annual Cultural Festival will be from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 6, at the University of Indianapolis, 1400 Campus Drive. Attendees can RSVP online. The event is free but donations are encouraged.
