The trees across Indianapolis are turning golden, brown and fiery orange, which means it’s time to rake the leaves in your yard. The Indianapolis Department of Public Works will start picking up those bags of leaves Nov. 9.
Each week, for no extra charge, you can leave up to 40 plastic bags of leaves out for pickup. They will be picked up on your regularly scheduled trash day, but crews will pick them up at different times. Here’s how to make sure your leaves get picked up:
- Don’t rake leaves into the street or into drains.
- Make sure to put them in plastic bags, not paper, since those can disintegrate when they get wet.
- Leave your bags of leaves 3 to 5 feet away from your trash cart.
- Put the bags of leaves out by 7 a.m. on your trash day.
For the week of Thanksgiving, all Thursday trash routes will move to Friday pickups and all Friday trash routes will move to Saturday.
The leaf collection season will run from Nov. 9 to Dec. 4. Outside of this season, DPW will only pick up leaves that are in your trash cart. If crews miss your home or your street on their route, call the Mayor’s Action Center at 317-327-4622 or submit a request for pickup on Request Indy.
Leaves that are collected will go to South Side Landfill, where they will be turned into compost.
