If you love or feel curious about science fiction, you won’t want to miss this year’s Translocal Afrofuturism Conference Oct. 8-11.

The second annual conference hosted by Kheprw Institute will bring together artists, authors and activists around the topic of Afrofuturism.

Afrofuturism reimagines elements of Black history and culture for the future. The event is an opportunity to dream of and create a future everyone wants to be a part of.

Chinyelu Mwaafrika, who works in marketing and community engagement at Kheprw, said he hopes neighbors leave the event inspired to bring their own vision of the future into reality.

To wrap up the conference, Kheprw Institute leaders will leave guests with a parting gift: a “Sinners” dance party. Dress in a costume that represents the past, present or future to recreate a special scene in Ryan Coogler’s horror blockbuster.

The conference also serves as a fundraiser for the organization to maintain its office building and 17-acre farm, and continue to host its monthly community events.

If you donate more than $50 or become a monthly donor, you can choose one of three Afrofuturism books: “Sweep of Stars” by Maurice Broaddus,  “Mojorhythm” by Sheree Renee Thomas or “Afrofuturism and World Order” by Reynaldo Anderson.

Though all events are free, registration is required.
