If your home was damaged in the severe flooding Indiana saw in August, you can apply for assistance money from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, or FEMA. As of Oct. 7, FEMA has approved more than 32,000 applications for assistance for Hoosiers.
All applications or updates to existing applications must be made by Oct. 25.
You can apply for assistance in several ways.
- You can apply online at disasterassistance.gov.
- You can call the FEMA help line at 800-621-3362.
- Download the FEMA app on your phone and apply there.
- You can check if there are in-person events in your county, where you can get help applying.
If you’ve already applied for assistance, you should stay in touch with FEMA and respond quickly to any letters, calls or requests for documents you receive.
Be wary of FEMA fraud. When FEMA inspectors show up to check out your property, they will have an official government ID and they will never ask for money.
You can also apply for money from the State Disaster Relief Fund. This money has to be used for damages that insurance didn’t cover at your primary residence. That can include home repairs or replacing essential items, such as furniture, appliances or clothes. Find out if you’re eligible online.
