A new playground was unveiled Aug. 5 at Indianapolis’ oldest park.
The upgraded jungle gym at Garfield Park is next to the Pagoda, 2432 Conservatory Drive. It provides more activities for children ages 2-12, such as music play features, sensory play items and additional climbing structures. Plus, a new rubber surface that is more kid friendly.
The sensory-inclusive environment is created with the incorporation of multiple elements, such as drums and bright colors for auditory and visual stimulation. Sensory-play areas are ideal for kids with certain conditions, including autism.
The renovations are part of a $5.5 million grant from the Lilly Endowment, which also paid for repairs to the Sunken Garden Fountains that reopened earlier this summer.
It’s also part of an $80 million investment from Lilly Endowment Grant to revamp 42 parks across Marion County. So far, nearly half of the projects have been completed.
Garfield Park dates back to 1873.
