Businesses, cities, nonprofits and other organizations with buses and diesel-powered equipment can apply for a federal grant of up to $250,000 to buy cleaner alternatives.

The Indiana Department of Environmental Management will accept applications for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Diesel Emission Reduction Act program grants until Feb. 28.

The program focuses on replacing diesel-powered vehicles, such as buses, refuse haulers and construction equipment, with new units that use diesel more efficiently or run on cleaner fuels, like propane and natural gas. The changes are intended to help improve Indiana’s air quality.

The program is available to public and private entities, such as municipalities, school districts, nonprofit organizations and businesses that operate diesel-powered equipment.

Grants will be distributed in amounts ranging from $50,000 to $250,000.

For more information about the grants, head to IDEM’s DieselWise Indiana website or contact IDEM senior environmental planner Shawn Seals at 317-233-0425 or SSeals@idem.IN.gov.
