Free help with filing federal and state tax returns is available through April 15 to residents with low to moderate incomes, but appointments are required.
Indy Free Tax Prep is a network of Volunteer Income Tax Assistance sites that is coordinated by the United Way of Central Indiana. The IRS sponsors the program.
Shannon Jenkins, vice president of impact for the United Way, said the program is open to individuals and families who had a combined household income of $66,000 or less in 2023.
“IRS-certified volunteers have prepared more than 40,000 tax returns and free electronic fillings for Central Indiana residents” since 2015, Jenkins said.
In addition, she said the United Way aims to ensure that residents who use the service are claiming tax credits for which they are eligible and completing tax returns accurately.
Tax assistance will be available until April 15, which is the deadline for filing tax returns.
