Indianapolis is a city with a remarkable music history, especially in the realm of jazz. But according to the new nonprofit INSPIRE Music Collective, there is room for improvement in the present moment. INSPIRE, located at 525 S. Meridian, on the Union Campus in downtown Indy, opened its doors to the public on Friday, Dec. 8.
“It’s a place where the legacy is meeting the future in real time,” said Richard “Sleepy” Floyd, INSPIRE’s founder and board chairman. “We’re going to show everyone what we’re doing here and what we have here.”
One of INSPIRE’s goals is to set aspiring musicians on the path of economic sustainability. So aside from the things you might expect in a music collective, such as recording equipment, you will also find tools for creating marketing and merchandising materials, available for members.
You can register for membership on their website. More information will be available later on membership prices and scholarship opportunities.

“I envision the ground-floor knowledge of your average musician in Indianapolis improving exponentially,” Floyd said. “They will know how to have the ability to know how to record on their own, when they come through these doors. There will also be someone here to teach them every aspect; they’ll be able to learn what it is to be a professional musician.”
