Keep Indianapolis Beautiful is accepting applications starting Jan. 29 from those who enjoy working outdoors. The positions are urban naturalist, youth tree team member and youth tree team leader. The positions are seasonal and run during the summer.
Adam Schmutte, director of urban ecology for the nonprofit organization, said college students selected for the urban naturalist program will care for and manage trees to improve the urban environment.

They also will do green infrastructure work, including “caring for rain gardens and stormwater planters comprised of native plants to help solve urban infrastructure challenges, such as flooding,” Schmutte said.
He said urban naturalists will receive professional development and networking on a weekly basis as well. The organization typically hires five people for the program, but that can vary depending on funding.
The Youth Tree Team cares for about 6,000 to 7,000 trees during the summer, Schmutte said. The work primarily involves watering and mulching. The organization plans to hire 55 high school-age youth to participate.
Since it is a first job for some, they also will receive job readiness training. And they will learn skills, such as time management and workplace communication.
The youth tree team leader supervises the team. Schmutte said those who are a good fit enjoy working with youth, have leadership skills and are good team players. The nonprofit will select 10 people for this role.
Applicants have to be 19 or older for the urban naturalist or youth tree team leader positions, and ages 14 to 18 for the Youth Tree Team.
