A team of local artists led by Big Car Collaborative will honor longtime Indy resident Mari Evans’ legacy with a three-part audio series titled, “Mari Evans: An Audio Family Album.”
Evans, who died in 2017, was best known for her poetry and as one of the founders of the Black Arts Movement during the 1960s and ‘70s.
The project is a tribute to Evans’ focus on family. Listeners can tune in to three episodes: “The Black Experience,” “The Family Conversation” and “Family As Foundation,” which will feature past tv shows, interviews, essays, poems and recorded conversations.
Ariana Beedie, Mirror Indy’s community journalism director, will read a chapter from Evans’ first full-length book of essays, “Clarity as Concept.”
Each episode will air at noon on 99.1 WQRT, Big Car’s art and community radio station, starting in July 16, what would have been Evans’ 106th birthday. You can find the full airing schedule here.
The project will also be available for visitors inside the Wagon of Wonders mobile art museum at SPARK on the Circle.
