Kinsey Bussell, a coordinator for Marion County Reentry Coalition, was planning a story slam to give formerly incarcerated people a chance to creatively tell their stories. Then Chreece, Indy’s annual hip-hop festival in Fountain Square, reached out to collaborate.

Now, that event has turned into Raps 4 Reentry, a hip-hop show by local artists who have experienced the justice system. You can see them perform from 6-8 p.m. Oct. 26 at Ujamaa Community Bookstore, 2424 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. St.

Bussell said that one of the performers learned about Chreece from reading Nuvo while he was incarcerated. He wanted to go to the festival once he was free, and now, in a full-circle moment, he’s one of seven headliners at Raps 4 Reentry.

The performers are DJ Bae, DJ Brooke Billions, Floetic Justice, Foosie, Lil Billy, Moskoni Alord and J. Fields.

Marion County Reentry Coalition is a network of 60 providers and 300 people in Indianapolis, working to help people who have been incarcerated reintegrate into society. It focuses on how the criminal justice system impacts people of color.
