Could you get around Indy for a week without using a vehicle? Local organizations are encouraging folks to leave their car keys at home Oct. 1-9.

The goal of the initiative is to provide more awareness to the needs of non-drivers. Community organizations will host a series of free events throughout the week. That includes training people to ride the bus, panel discussions and coffee meetups.

• Multimodal coffee meetup: 7-8 a.m. Oct. 1 at Blue Mind Coffee, 646 E. 38th St. Residents are encouraged to use the IndyGo Red and Purple Lines. Free coffee and pastries provided. Register online.
• Cycle City Community Art Show: 6-9 p.m. Oct. 2 at Patina Gallery, 2201 E. Michigan St.
• GermanFest: 11:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Oct. 3 at the Athenaeum, 401 E. Michigan St. The event will include free bike valet parking.
• Meet IndyGo staff 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Oct. 3 at Butler University Clowes Hall, 4602 Sunset Ave. Attendees will learn to ride the bus and ride to the Broad Ripple Farmer’s market and back. Free bus passes are sponsored by the Broad Ripple Village Association while supplies last.
• Meetup and panel discussion: 4:30-8 p.m. Oct. 5 at Brew Link Indy Downtown, 714 N. Capitol Ave. There will be free appetizers and safety swag while supplies last. Registration is required.
• Bus to the SoBro Farmers Market: 4:30-6:30 p.m. Oct. 7, 4922 N. College Ave. Free bus passes are sponsored by the Broad Ripple Village Association while supplies last.
• Transit Riders Union, virtual meeting: 7-8 a.m. Oct. 7. Here is the agenda and meeting link.
• Bus Buddies, Bus Trip and Meetup: 5-10 p.m. Oct. 8 at Lille Bønne Community Living Room, 701 E. McCarty St. Learn to ride the bus from Fletcher Place to Broad Ripple with Michael Zarick, creator of Third Space Indy, and Seth Johnson. Attendees will eat food before riding back. Register online.

Week Without Driving started in Washington in 2021. It’s since become a national and global initiative.

The local initiative is hosted by Central Indiana Cycling, Indy MPO, CIRTA Commuter Connect, IndyGo, Health by Design, Third Space Indy, Indianapolis Cultural Trail, Pacers Bikeshare, Bicycle Garage Indy, and People We Meet On the Bus.
