Attorneys and law students who want to learn how to draft asylum applications can sign up for free training May 7.
Exodus Refugee, an Indy-based organization that supports people fleeing from other countries, will host a legal volunteer workshop so more community members can provide legal advice without “being fully responsible for taking on a full case.”
The lives of immigrants have been upended over the past few months after the Trump administration suspended the decades-old United States Refugee Admission Program.
Trump signed an executive order in January that banned refugee resettlement and froze foreign aid. Resettlement agencies, like Exodus Refugee, received stop work orders to prevent organizations from providing resources to refugees who had recently arrived.
In Indianapolis, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents were videoed dragging two immigrants out of a car during a traffic stop. As deportations increase, organizations like Exodus Refugee want to ensure there are enough law experts to help immigrants navigate the legal system.
