It should come as no surprise that this self-professed journalism nerd needed a little extra help with math in school.
That’s why I kept the phone number 877-ASK-ROSE handy when my grade school teachers in Lawrence Township shared information about AskRose Homework Help.
It’s a free homework hotline from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. The tutoring resource helped on more than one occasion when the after-school stress of an unexpectedly too-tough geometry or algebra problem set in hours past when my teachers would be available to help. (Teachers have lives, you know!)
That’s where AskRose shined. Just a phone call away, a college student — usually with access to my same textbook — was there to help guide me through where I was stuck and give me the confidence (or at least piece of mind) to know I wouldn’t fail miserably on a tricky concept.
Why share this *gulp* more than 10-12 years after I last used the service? AskRose is back for another school year.
The program, which is staffed by as many as 20 Rose-Hulman students at a time, has been offering its free tutoring service since 1991. Funded by the Lilly Endowment, AskRose offers math and science help to middle and high school students from 5-10 p.m. every Sunday through Thursday during the school year.
It’s changed a little bit since my day. Now you can also email or chat for help. Spanish-speaking tutors are available on a varying basis. You can check their schedule throughout the year by visiting AskRose’s website.
The website is loaded with resources, too. There’s more than 500 videos and downloadable homework help materials available for students and educators.
