Residents should count on a few road closures this month on the south and east sides as Citizens Energy Group’s DigIndy tunnel system enters its final construction phases.

  • The intersection of East Pleasant Run Parkway North Drive and St. Paul Street closed on Feb. 1 and will remain closed for up to four weeks.
  • Around Feb. 10, St. Clair Street will be closed for up to two weeks at its intersection with North Whittier Place on the north side of Ellenberger Park.
  • Around Feb. 17, State Avenue will close for about five months at its intersection with East Pleasant Run Parkway North Drive near Orange Street. The Pleasant Run Trail will also close at this location.

For each closure, signs will direct motorists to detours.

The DigIndy system is a 28-mile network of underground tunnels aimed at reducing sewage overflows from the city’s combined sewer system.

The project was launched in response to a 2006 U.S. Environmental Protection Agency consent decree, which required the city to significantly reduce the amount of sewage that flowed into waterways after rainstorms.

The completed portions of the system have already prevented more than 6 billion gallons of sewage from overflowing into local waterways, according to Citizens.

Construction is slated to conclude this year.
