Conner Prairie in Fishers will host a weeklong event to highlight and uplift Black nature enthusiasts and offer a safe space for them to pursue their passion.
Black Birders Week is open to everyone and runs until May 31. It includes daily events such as guided birdwatching tours, hikes, crafts and book discussions.
The program was organized by The BlackAFinSTEM Collective in response to a 2020 incident that happened in New York’s Central Park, where birdwatcher Christian Cooper, who is Black, was falsely accused of threatening a white woman and her dog.
The event, which began over Memorial Day weekend, is free with the price of general admission to Conner Prairie. For more information about the event and a schedule of activities, head to the event site.
