The Community Alliance of the Far Eastside, also known as CAFE, is holding food drives twice a month.
What started during the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic as a way to help Indianapolis residents who were unable to go to stores still is providing help to those in need.
“The drives are typically every second and fourth Monday throughout the year, but we changed it to the first and third Monday for December,” Senior Community Engagement Manager Dominique Cork said.
Cork said they have food available for at least 200 families. “But what we’ve noticed on our side of town is that there are multiple families in one household,” she said.
CAFE primarily serves residents living in the 46218, 46226, 46229, 46235 and 46236 ZIP codes but the food distribution is open to everyone.
“No one gets turned away,” Cork said.
Families typically receive vegetarian broth, crackers, popcorn, potatoes, onions and other produce provided by Gleaners Food Bank.
The next food distribution is at 1 p.m. Dec. 18 and runs until everything is gone, which is usually by 3 p.m. The address is 8902 E. 38th St.
“It is best to arrive early because items go fast,” Cork said.
CAFE also welcomes volunteers to arrive by 11 a.m. and help for the amount of time they can.
