Lawrence Mayor Deb Whitfield, a Democrat, has announced she will seek reelection in next year’s mayoral race.
Whitfield was elected in 2023 and succeeded two-term Republican Mayor Steve Collier. Her election made her the first Black person, and woman, to serve as a mayor in Marion County. Prior to becoming mayor, Whitfield served on the Lawrence city council.
One of Whitfield’s signature initiatives as mayor is the Live Longer in Lawrence campaign. The initiative has expanded the city’s wellness programs, health education and increased opportunities for physical activity to promote a healthier city.
However, over the course of her first term, Whitfield has also faced criticism from the Lawrence council over transparency and the city’s finances. Councilors were concerned that expenses in the 2026 budget were more than what the city had in its reserves. During her 2026 state of the city address, Whitfield said the city “is in a strong and stable fiscal position” and that she is committed to transparency and accountability.
In a news release, Whitfield said some priorities in her second term would include investments in infrastructure, economic growth, housing and enhancing parks and public spaces.
The mayoral election will be Nov. 2, 2027. The primary will be May 4.
